Read this one differently from the others on this site. DigitalOcean isn't managed WordPress hosting — it's raw cloud infrastructure. You rent a Linux server (a "Droplet"), and installing WordPress, patching the OS, configuring caching, and fixing it at 2am are all your job. In exchange, it is far and away the cheapest option we cover.

The free Starter support tier targets a response in under 24 hours with an average 48-hour resolution — fine for questions, thin cover if your store is down.
DigitalOcean makes sense if you're comfortable in a terminal, or you're willing to learn, and you'd rather spend an afternoon configuring a server than $30/mo forever. It's the right call for developers, technical founders, and side projects where downtime is annoying rather than expensive.
It's the wrong call if your time is worth more than the difference. A site earning real revenue is usually better served by Kinsta or WP Engine, where the host handles the parts that break.
